Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Manchester United striker and interim manager, is reportedly in talks for a return to one of his former clubs as he seeks his next managerial opportunity.

This news follows van Nistelrooy’s departure from Old Trafford, where he was not retained by new manager Ruben Amorim after a brief stint as interim manager. During his time in charge, van Nistelrooy led the team to an unbeaten record, securing three wins and a draw over four matches, including a commendable result against Chelsea.

According to reports from Sky Germany, Hamburg is considering van Nistelrooy for their managerial vacancy after parting ways with Steffen Baumgart following a 2-2 draw with Schalke. The club currently sits eighth in the 2. Bundesliga standings.

Van Nistelrooy’s previous connection to Hamburg, where he played for a season from 2010 to 2011 and scored 17 goals in 44 appearances, positions him as a compelling candidate. His growing reputation as a manager, coupled with his familiarity with the club, makes him a strong contender for the role.

Prior to his time at Manchester United, van Nistelrooy was the head coach at PSV Eindhoven and was previously considered for the HSV coaching position earlier this year. Sky reports that discussions took place between van Nistelrooy and former HSV sporting director Jonas Boldt regarding the role before Baumgart was appointed in February. Additionally, van Nistelrooy had a brief observational stint at Hamburg in December 2014 as part of his coaching development.

Following his exit from Manchester United, van Nistelrooy expressed heartfelt gratitude to the club through a message on X. He thanked the staff, players, and fans for their support, stating, “It has been a privilege and honor to represent the club as a player, coach, and manager. I will always cherish the memories we have shared.”

He concluded with a heartfelt wish for the club’s future success, saying, “Manchester United will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon.”

As speculation continues, many will be watching to see if van Nistelrooy will take the reins at Hamburg and embark on a new chapter in his managerial career.
