United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a strong condemnation of the terrorist attack that took place in Bamako, Mali, on September 17, as reported by his spokesman.
In a statement, Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief’s spokesperson, conveyed Guterres’ heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the transitional government and citizens of Mali. He also expressed wishes for a swift recovery for those injured, including a member of a UN guard unit.
Guterres urged the Malian transitional government to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice, emphasizing the need for accountability.
The attack targeted a gendarmerie complex in the capital, Bamako, with the Malian Ministry of Security and Civil Protection confirming that the situation has since been brought under control. Although the ministry did not release specific casualty figures, media reports indicate that the attack resulted in over 70 fatalities and more than 200 injuries.
