In a thrilling match early Wednesday in Santo Domingo, Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, secured a hard-fought victory against hosts Dominican Republic, thanks to a dramatic goal in the 89th minute during the ongoing 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Midfielder Shakirat Moshood delivered a standout performance, scoring with a powerful left-footed shot from 25 yards, marking her fourth goal of the tournament. Earlier in the match, a potential goal from Moshood was disallowed for offside by the Video Assistant Referee, while team captain Taiwo Afolabi forced a save from the Dominican goalkeeper shortly thereafter.

The Flamingos maintained relentless pressure throughout the second half, culminating in Moshood’s late strike that sealed the win. This victory marks the Flamingos’ third consecutive win, positioning them at the top of Group A with a total of nine points, ahead of Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, and New Zealand.

The Nigerian team has showcased impressive form in the tournament, winning their first two matches with a remarkable goal tally of eight while conceding only one. Coach Bankole Olowokoore’s squad kicked off their campaign with a decisive 4-1 victory over New Zealand and followed it up with a commanding 4-0 win against Ecuador.

Olowokoore expressed gratitude for the support from fans and reiterated his belief in the team’s potential. “We appreciate the support from Nigerians. They should continue to believe in us. We promise to bring them joy and pride, fulfilling the commitment we made before leaving Nigeria,” he stated.

As the Flamingos prepare for their upcoming quarterfinal match against the United States, anticipation builds for what promises to be an exciting clash.
