Abuja- President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, has called for the temporary suspension of economic sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea by the regional bloc.
The announcement was made during an extraordinary session of ECOWAS held in Abuja on Saturday.
According to Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, President Tinubu expressed his belief in pursuing a more constructive approach to promote democratic governance and improve the welfare of the affected nations’ populations. Tinubu emphasized that the sanctions, which were initially intended to encourage negotiations, have become an obstacle hindering progress.
He stressed the importance of unity among member states and the shared responsibility to enhance the lives of people within the region.
Tinubu also drew attention to the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and Lent, invoking the values of compassion, hope, and harmony. He urged ECOWAS to extend a hand of friendship and brotherhood to Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, not only in words but through practical actions. The President proposed the indefinite suspension of economic sanctions, while facilitating the unrestricted flow of essential supplies such as food, medicine, and humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable populations.
Furthermore, Tinubu highlighted the significance of resuming the export of electric power from Nigeria to Niger. He emphasized that the suspension of sanctions would serve as an initial step towards breaking the current diplomatic impasse and fostering greater cooperation within the ECOWAS community. Tinubu acknowledged the pressing challenges that transcend borders, including climate change, violent extremism, and illicit exploitation of natural resources, which require collective efforts for effective solutions.
As leaders of ECOWAS, Tinubu called upon the heads of state in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger to embrace dialogue and work collaboratively towards the economic development of their respective nations. He emphasized the shared responsibility of shaping the region’s history and the need to build a stronger regional home for all.
