Tinubu Launches African Counter-Terrorism Summit Promoting Regional Cooperation

In a momentous occasion, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the highly anticipated African Counter-Terrorism Summit today at the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja.

This significant event, organized by Nigeria in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, is set to take place from Monday to Tuesday, April 23, 2024, under the theme “Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Institution Building to Address the Evolving Threat of Terrorism.”

With the primary objective of bolstering multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation, this summit aims to reshape the collective response of the international community to terrorism in Africa. The Presidency, in a statement released on Sunday, expressed its commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts through this groundbreaking gathering.

Distinguished guests attending the summit include Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and Ms. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. Notable leaders such as H.E. Patrice Talon, President of the Republic of Benin, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, and H.E. Faure Gnassingbe, President of the Republic of Togo, will also grace the event. Among the esteemed attendees are Yusuf Tuggar, Foreign Affairs Minister of Nigeria, General Hanana Hanana, Minister of National Defence of Mauritius, and Mr. Moussa Faki Mahmat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, among others.

The African Counter-Terrorism Summit holds great promise in fostering regional collaboration and strengthening institutions to confront the ever-evolving threat of terrorism. As the summit progresses, it is expected to lay the foundation for a more coordinated and proactive approach to combating terrorism across the African continent.
