In a decisive move, President Bola Tinubu has summoned the leadership of Nigeria’s major labor unions to the Presidential Villa on Thursday for crucial talks on establishing a new national minimum wage.

According to a high-ranking source within the labor movement, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Tinubu is keen to resolve the long-standing negotiations on minimum wage during the emergency meeting.

“The President has invited the presidents of the Nigeria Labor Congress and the Trade Union Congress to the Villa tomorrow,” the source said. “He is apparently ready to finalize an agreement on a new minimum wage standard.”

The federal government and organized labor have been locked in protracted discussions for months, unable to agree on a updated minimum wage figure that adequately addresses the rising cost of living. However, Tinubu’s decision to personally intervene suggests a resolution may be within reach.

Further details about the specifics of the proposed minimum wage are expected to emerge following Thursday’s talks at the Presidential Villa. The outcome of the high-level meeting could have significant implications for millions of Nigerian workers struggling with the impacts of inflation.
