In a tragic incident, three site workers have been killed after a building under construction collapsed in the Arowojobe Estate area of Maryland, Lagos.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the incident occurred on Thursday morning at around 3:49 am on Wilson Mba Street. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the details in a statement.
“The agency received a distress call regarding the collapsed building and immediately activated our response team,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Upon arrival at the scene at 3:58 am, we discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.”
Search and rescue operations were swiftly launched, with LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service working together to recover the victims. Tragically, three adult male site workers were found dead at the scene. Two other male adults were rescued alive, and one man was still trapped under the rubble at the time of the statement.
“All the six men were site workers,” Oke-Osanyintolu added. “The rescued ones are receiving pre-hospital care on location, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been contacted for the remains of the three fatalities.”
A combined team of LASEMA personnel, firefighters, and the Nigeria Police are currently working at the scene, with LASEMA’s excavator deployed to accelerate the search and rescue efforts.
The cause of the building collapse is still under investigation, but the incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter construction regulations and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
