Sheikh Hasina Flees Bangladesh Amid Massive Protests
In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country following weeks of intense protests. The 76-year-old leader, who has ruled Bangladesh for over 20 years, resigned on August 5 and escaped to India under the cover of darkness. This unexpected departure has left the nation in a state of political and economic uncertainty.
The protests, which began on July 1, were initially sparked by demands for government job quota reforms but quickly escalated into a widespread movement calling for Hasina’s resignation and democratic reforms. The demonstrations, led predominantly by the country’s youth, saw violent clashes with security forces, resulting in over 300 deaths and numerous injuries.
