In a bid to enhance the integrity of the Nigerian Police Force, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, has called upon the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take decisive action against corrupt officers within the ranks.
During the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony held in Abuja, Senator Akpabio expressed his appreciation for the event and praised IGP Egbetokun and the entire leadership of the Police Force for their commitment to honoring deserving officers. He emphasized the significance of recognizing the gallant contributions of individuals, as it serves to inspire higher levels of performance and reinforces the Force’s new agenda, which prioritizes ethical regeneration, professional standards restoration, and an intensified anti-corruption campaign.
While acknowledging the evolving landscape of crime and the growing sophistication of criminal organizations as major hurdles, Senator Akpabio stressed the importance of addressing these challenges. He underscored the need to identify and remove the bad elements within the Force, as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The Senator urged collective efforts in finding effective solutions to these issues.
As the leader of the National Assembly, Senator Akpabio assured unwavering support and cooperation in the quest for improved policing in Nigeria. Recognizing the crucial role of a well-equipped and motivated police force in ensuring citizen security and well-being, he pledged to continue providing the necessary legislative framework and resources for effective law enforcement.
Senator Akpabio also emphasized that the Police Force requires the support and collaboration of all stakeholders. He stated, “Overcoming these challenges and building a stronger and more effective Police Force necessitates the support and cooperation of all stakeholders.” The Senator commended the awardees for their exceptional performance and dedication to national service, reminding them that their recognition comes with higher expectations.
In addition to honoring outstanding officers in various aspects of policing, the ceremony included posthumous awards in memory of the seven police personnel who lost their lives in the Ugheli forest in Delta State on February 20, 2024. The families of the fallen heroes received the awards and were also presented with cheques for their entitlements. Senator Akpabio, representing the Nigeria Police, announced a personal contribution of one million naira to assist the families in their journey back home, while the Senate as an institution pledged a support of 20 million naira.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State also displayed generosity by donating 20 million naira to support the families of the deceased. Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima commended the Senate President and the Kano State Governor for their empathetic gestures towards the affected families, recognizing the importance of such support during difficult times.
