In a bid to tackle the prevailing insecurity in the country, the Nigerian Senate has announced its plan to enforce compulsory registration of citizens. This decision was reached after an extensive nine-hour closed-door meeting between senators and top security chiefs on Tuesday.
Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity, stressed that the primary objective of this mandatory registration is to safeguard against the infiltration of foreign criminals into the nation.
During the meeting, the security chiefs provided updates on their concerted efforts to combat insecurity, which received resounding support from the senators. Adaramodu commended the security agencies for their remarkable achievements in apprehending and neutralizing criminals in recent times. Furthermore, the Senate urged the security agencies to intensify their collaboration to ensure the comprehensive protection of lives and properties across the country.
Both the upper and lower legislative chambers unequivocally expressed their commitment to combating the menace of insecurity. The high-profile gathering witnessed the presence of notable figures, including the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, and Minister of Interior, Hon Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
