The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has raised concerns regarding the utilization of the N144.2 billion federal allocation received by the state over the past five months. The party claims that there is a lack of visible development projects to justify the expenditure of these funds.
In response, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, has dismissed the APC’s allegations, accusing them of engaging in political gamesmanship.
During a visit to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the Chairman of the state APC Caretaker Committee, Chief Tony Okocha, questioned Governor Fubara’s management of the state’s resources. Okocha presented data indicating that the Rivers State Government received a total of N144,291,667,791.1 from the federal allocation between June 22, 2023, and November 2023. He expressed disappointment that these substantial funds had not translated into visible developmental projects, and instead seemed to be channeled towards extravagant street processions and media-sponsored rallies.
Okocha also emphasized the presence of “fifth columnists and crisis entrepreneurs” who are exploiting the state’s resources for personal gain. He warned the Assembly Speaker that failing to take action would imply complicity in the alleged financial misconduct.
Responding to the allegations, Speaker Amaewhule assured the public that the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly would continue to pass legislation that benefits the people, while also amending any laws that may be detrimental to their interests. He emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to serving the state and ensuring that future administrations build upon their efforts.
In defense of Governor Fubara, Commissioner Joseph Johnson asserted that the administration had been transparent and responsible in managing the allocated funds. He stated that the government’s achievements would be evident when the accountability forum is held, and the people of Rivers State would witness the progress made. Johnson highlighted significant infrastructure projects such as the N150 billion Ring Road project, of which 77 percent has been paid, and the development of 20,000 hectares of land for housing units. He also mentioned the promotion of long-overdue civil servants and the associated wage bill.
The Commissioner urged Chief Okocha to reconsider his statements and gain a better understanding of the government’s initiatives before making unfounded claims. Johnson asserted that the Fubara administration was committed to delivering meaningful development to the people of Rivers State.
