Rebels Seize Aleppo as Syrian Army Plans Counterattack

Syrian rebel forces have captured large parts of Aleppo in a surprise offensive. The Syrian army has withdrawn temporarily to regroup. This marks a significant shift in Syria’s ongoing civil conflict.

The insurgent assault began on Wednesday. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Islamist group, led the attack. Rebels quickly seized Aleppo’s airport and nearby towns.

Syrian Army Admits Setback

The Syrian military publicly acknowledged the rebel advance. They cited “large numbers of terrorists” as the reason for their retreat. The army is now regrouping to strengthen defenses and plan a counteroffensive.

Military officials reported dozens of casualties among their ranks. Intense fighting has spread over an area exceeding 100 kilometers. The conflict spans the Aleppo and Idlib governorates.

Assad Promises Victory

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad vowed to protect Syria’s stability and sovereignty. He expressed confidence in defeating the rebels. “We will overcome these terrorist actions,” Assad declared.

Russia Joins the Fight

Russia, Syria’s key ally, has intervened in the conflict. On Saturday, Russian warplanes conducted airstrikes in Aleppo. This marks their first engagement in the city since 2016.

Russian state news agency Tass claimed their forces eliminated 200 militants. However, independent sources have not verified these reports.

Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds

The sudden violence has sparked a humanitarian crisis. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports at least 372 deaths. This includes 20 civilians. Many more have fled their homes.

Roads leading out of Aleppo are congested with fleeing residents. Schools and government offices have closed. Most people are staying indoors for safety.

Rebels Advance and Reassure

Insurgents have shared images of themselves near Aleppo’s historic citadel. They’re also interacting with locals, attempting to reassure them. Some displaced civilians have returned to areas now under rebel control.

Regional Impact of Rebel Attack

The Aleppo offensive coincides with other regional events. A ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel began on the same day. Meanwhile, Turkey struggles to halt Syrian government attacks in the region.

This offensive violates a 2019 agreement. Russia, Turkey, and Iran had brokered the deal to stabilize the conflict.

What’s Next?

All eyes are now on the Syrian government’s promised counteroffensive. The coming days are crucial. Can Assad’s forces reclaim Aleppo? Or will rebels solidify their unexpected gains?

The international community watches closely. This new chapter in Syria’s complex conflict could have far-reaching consequences. Regional stability and humanitarian concerns hang in the balance.
