In a surprise move, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended and transferred the Senior Pastor of the popular City of David Parish in Lagos, Idowu Iluyomade.
The suspension, which is set to last for three months, comes in the wake of the elaborate 60th birthday celebration held for Iluyomade’s wife, Siju, shortly after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank, who was a prominent member of the church.
According to sources within the RCCG, the decision to suspend Iluyomade was made by the church’s Governing Council after a panel was convened to investigate allegations against the pastor and his parish.
The council’s move is seen as a response to the public outcry over the timing and extravagance of the birthday celebration, which many felt was insensitive given Wigwe’s recent passing.
In addition to the suspension, the council has also decided to transfer Iluyomade from the City of David Parish to the church’s headquarters upon his return from the suspension period. He will be replaced in the interim by Pastor Charles Kpandei of the RCCG’s Resurrection Parish Region 11.
Iluyomade, who is also the Special Assistant to the RCCG General Overseer on Christian Social Responsibility, may face further repercussions as the council’s investigation is reported to have uncovered issues related to the audit of the church’s finances as well.
The suspension and transfer of such a prominent figure within the RCCG have sent shockwaves through the congregation, with many questioning the church’s actions and the implications for its leadership.
As the faithful await Iluyomade’s return and the outcome of the council’s investigation, the RCCG’s decision underscores the gravity of the situation and the church’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised by its congregation.
