Abuja, August 23, 2024 – In a swearing-in ceremony held this morning at the State House, President Bola Tinubu officially appointed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The new Chief Justice took the oath of office at 11:40 am in the Council Chamber, signing the official register to formally assume her position. She succeeds outgoing CJN Tanko Ariwoola, who retired yesterday upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Justice Kekere-Ekun’s ability to lead the judiciary, stating, “Justice Kekere-Ekun’s distinguished legal career and commitment to upholding the rule of law make her the ideal candidate to serve as our nation’s top judge. I am honored to swear her in today, and I look forward to working alongside her to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system.”
The appointment is pending confirmation by the Nigerian Senate, which is expected to convene in the coming weeks to consider Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination. If confirmed, she will become the third female Chief Justice in Nigeria’s history.
