The Borno State Police Command has successfully rearrested Abubakar Mohammed, a convict who escaped from the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Maiduguri during the devastating floods on September 10.

This announcement was made on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno, SP Ahmed Wakil. He revealed that the police were alerted by a local resident who spotted Mohammed in Gubio town.

“The Borno Police Command is pleased to announce the successful rearrest of Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a sentence for culpable homicide,” Wakil stated. “On September 15, 2024, around 3:00 PM, a resident of Bulakara Ward in Gubio Local Government Area notified the police after seeing Abubakar in the town, following his escape from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri due to the collapse of the facility’s fence from the flood.”

A police patrol team quickly responded to the alert and apprehended the escaped convict. Abubakar Mohammed will be returned to the Nigerian Correctional Service, and efforts are underway to locate other inmates who may have also escaped.

Reports indicate that more than 280 inmates fled the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre as a result of the severe flooding in the area.
