In a dramatic incident at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, a woman was caught on camera tearing her husband’s Nigerian passport shortly after their arrival from Europe.
The woman, identified as Mrs. Igiebor, a content creator known for sharing family-focused content on TikTok, has now broken her silence on the reasons behind her actions.
According to Mrs. Igiebor, the passport-tearing incident was not an isolated event, but rather the culmination of long-standing family issues that had been brewing for some time. In a video statement, she claimed that her husband had been neglecting her in favor of his family members, making her feel like “the wife to be suffering.”
“This issue has been going on for a long time. And I have to do what I did. Don’t just look at my actions alone. I’m not a mad woman. I have gone through so many things. I have my own reasons,” Mrs. Igiebor said.
The woman further explained that she deliberately chose to destroy the passport in Nigeria, rather than in Europe where they had previously been residing, in order to spare her husband the “stress” of dealing with the consequences.
“What if I had done this thing in Europe, where we came from? I don’t want him to go through much stress, which is why I did it in Nigeria,” she said.
While Mrs. Igiebor did not provide specific details about the events that led to the passport destruction, she hinted at a complex family dynamic, describing her husband as a “mother’s boy” and “sister’s and brother’s best brother,” leaving her to bear the brunt of the pain.
The incident has sparked outrage and prompted an investigation by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which has emphasized that the willful destruction of Nigerian travel documents is a violation of the Immigration Act 2015 and could carry significant penalties.
In her video statement, Mrs. Igiebor apologized to Nigerians and the NIS for her actions, but also called for her husband to come forward and address the underlying issues that led to this dramatic confrontation at the airport.
