The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Ige, has expressed his commitment to advancing the goals of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Oyo State.

This pledge came during a courtesy visit from a UNICEF team, which sought the monarch’s backing for efforts aimed at protecting children’s rights in Nigeria.

Speaking through the Maye Olubadan, Chief Olalekan Alabi, at the Oke Aremo palace in Ibadan, the monarch welcomed the decision to engage him as a key contact among traditional rulers across the country. He highlighted Ibadan’s historical significance in Nigeria, noting its role as a leader in various sectors, including education and healthcare.

“Ibadan is known as the home of many firsts in Nigeria. From the establishment of the first teaching hospital, the University College Hospital (UCH), to the founding of the first university in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan, in 1948, and the first television station in Africa, our city has consistently led the way in development,” he stated. “With your visit, I believe we can achieve UNICEF’s objectives related to reducing maternal and infant mortality, as well as addressing other critical health challenges.”

Mohammed Okorie, the leader of the UNICEF delegation, explained that the purpose of the visit was to enlist the Olubadan’s support in raising awareness among parents and guardians about the importance of children’s rights. He pointed out that many residents of Ibadan and Oyo State are not accessing UNICEF services as intended.

“Every child’s rights must be safeguarded. We urge the Olubadan, along with his council, chiefs, mogajis, and baales, to engage the community in utilizing the resources and services offered by UNICEF. It is essential for expectant mothers to attend antenatal care and for families to seek assistance for elderly care,” Okorie emphasized. He also mentioned the need for financial support for secondary healthcare institutions and hospitals as necessary.
