The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sadness over the passing of Mr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi described Iwuanyanwu’s death as a shocking and devastating loss.
“I am greatly disheartened by the death of an elder statesman and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu,” Obi wrote. “The devastating reports of his death have left all who knew him heartbroken.”
Obi praised Iwuanyanwu as a “bridge builder” who remained committed to the peaceful coexistence of the nation, and a patriotic Nigerian whose desire for justice, equity, progress and development transcended tribal boundaries.
“He was one of those revered father figures, who had always given me useful advice,” Obi said. “He promised me that he would soon be alright to continue with his contributions to the progress of the nation. I continued to pray for his quick and full recovery.”
The former Anambra State governor extended his condolences to Iwuanyanwu’s immediate family, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo organization, and the entire nation, expressing his hope that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss and grant the late elder statesman eternal rest.
Iwuanyanwu’s passing marks the loss of a prominent Igbo leader and nationalist who had dedicated his life to advocating for the interests of the Igbo people and the unity of Nigeria.
