Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, recently addressed concerns over his alleged desperation to become the next president, emphasizing his dedication to addressing the plight of the poor and less privileged Nigerians.
In a press conference held in Abuja, Obi expressed disappointment at the criticisms and reiterated his commitment to tackling pressing issues plaguing the country.
Obi’s remarks came in response to criticism he faced after questioning the Federal Government’s timing and prioritization of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project. While some critics accused him of overlooking the administration’s efforts due to his alleged presidential aspirations in 2027, Obi clarified that his focus was on improving the lives of underprivileged Nigerians rather than personal ambition.
Acknowledging the dire state of major highways such as Lagos-Badagry and Kano-Kaduna, Obi emphasized the need for a serious government to prioritize the repair and maintenance of existing roads. He expressed his intention to prioritize the completion of ongoing road projects, citing examples of long-standing roadworks and the discomfort faced by commuters on various routes across the country.
Obi highlighted his experience as the former governor of Anambra State, stating that during his tenure, he prioritized the completion of unfinished roads before embarking on new projects. He stressed the importance of utilizing available resources to address the existing network of roads in need of repair, rather than introducing additional projects while neglecting the deteriorating infrastructure.
Obi dismissed allegations of presidential desperation, reiterating his commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged Nigerians. He called for a strategic focus on repairing existing roads and addressing pressing issues that affect the daily lives of citizens across the country.
