ABUJA – In a surprise move, the National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to succeed Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria. The decision was made during a closed-door meeting held on Thursday in Abuja, which was originally scheduled for Friday.
The NJC’s recommendation comes just weeks before Justice Ariwoola’s mandatory retirement on August 22. The council also made recommendations for 27 other individuals to serve as judges in state high courts during the ongoing meeting.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment, if confirmed, would mark a significant moment for the Nigerian judiciary. Further details regarding the NJC’s selection process and Justice Kekere-Ekun’s qualifications are expected to be released shortly.
