YENAGOA, August 9, 2023 – The Niger Delta region has the potential to serve as the breadbasket of Nigeria, according to the head of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NDBDA).
In a statement made at the recent Niger Delta International Festival and Expo/Economic Summit in Abuja, NDBDA Managing Director Chief Ebitimi Amgbare asserted that the region’s rich biodiversity and abundant water resources could be harnessed to significantly boost the country’s food production.
“As the Managing Director, I can assure you that the Niger Delta can sufficiently feed Nigeria,” Amgbare said. “There is no need to import fish; we can supply fish to the entire country.”
Amgbare explained that since taking office under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, the NDBDA’s key focus has been on fostering collaboration with various stakeholders to unlock the region’s agricultural potential.
“Collaboration is fundamental to our efforts to boost food production in the Niger Delta,” he said. “We are committed to working with partners to harness the region’s resources and ensure that Nigeria can achieve food security.”
The event, organized by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, aimed to explore strategies for transforming the economic fortunes of the Niger Delta region, which has long struggled with the effects of environmental degradation and economic marginalization.
Amgbare commended the organizers for providing a platform for these crucial discussions and thanked the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Abubakar Momoh, for making the program a reality.
“This is an important step in our efforts to unlock the full potential of the Niger Delta,” Amgbare said. “With the right partnerships and investments, we can ensure that this region becomes the engine that drives Nigeria’s agricultural transformation and food security.”
