In response to the ongoing fuel scarcity plaguing the country, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning, expressing their intention to embark on mass action if the Federal Government fails to swiftly address the crisis.
Additionally, they have called for the resignation of Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), unless decisive actions are taken to alleviate the situation.
Babatunde Akinteye, the Senate President of NANS, conveyed the frustrations and helplessness experienced by numerous citizens, including students, due to the prevailing fuel scarcity. The shortage has caused immense difficulties for Nigerians in Lagos and other regions as they struggle to acquire Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Many filling stations have remained closed throughout the weekend, exacerbating the situation.
Despite previous assurances from the NNPCL regarding the resolution of logistical challenges contributing to the fuel scarcity, the queues at filling stations have yet to diminish. The prolonged scarcity has created an opportunity for black market operators to exploit desperate Nigerians, with some selling a liter of fuel between N700 and N800, far above the normal price. As a consequence, transportation fares have skyrocketed, further burdening the populace.
The Nigerian student community, a vital segment of the population, has now raised their voice, demanding urgent action to alleviate the fuel crisis. With the threat of mass action looming, the Federal Government faces mounting pressure to implement effective measures that will alleviate the scarcity and ease the burden on the Nigerian people.
As the nation grapples with these challenges, the government’s response and ability to find a lasting solution to the fuel scarcity will undoubtedly be closely scrutinized, not only by the students but also by the wider Nigerian public. The coming days will reveal the course of action taken by the government and the subsequent impact on the lives of the citizens.
