The Nigerian Navy has taken decisive action against the rising threat of sea piracy in the Gulf of Guinea by deploying a fleet of eight elite warships and two helicopters.

Vice Admiral Emmanual Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, announced the strategic move during the inauguration of exercise ‘Obangame Express 2024’ in Onne, Rivers State.

The maritime security operations will encompass a wide range of activities, including anti-crude oil operations, anti-sea piracy measures, anti-sea robbery efforts, anti-fishing initiatives, as well as boarding and aerial operations. This comprehensive approach aims to tackle the root causes of piracy and ensure the safety of maritime trade in the region.

Vice Admiral Ogalla emphasized that the deployment is part of a broader global joint naval operation. Under the sponsorship of the United States African Command (US Africom), the ‘Obangame Express’ exercise brings together naval fleets from the Gulf of Guinea and key partners from Europe, such as the Spanish navy, and North America. The objective is to foster collaboration among like-minded partners and develop African-led solutions to transnational threats, thereby enhancing regional security.

Highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to the anti-piracy mission, Vice Admiral Ogalla mentioned recent successful joint operations with neighboring countries. One notable achievement was the arrest of the vessel ‘MV Jasmine’ for alleged crude oil theft, thanks to the collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and the Cameroonian Navy. Additionally, the Nigerian Navy acted upon information provided by the French navy, leading to the apprehension of another rogue vessel, ‘MT Big Majesty,’ in the Gulf of Guinea. Recently, the Nigerian Navy, acting on behalf of the Gabonese Government, successfully apprehended ‘MV Blu Shark,’ further reinforcing Nigeria’s dedication to regional collaboration.

These achievements reflect the core objectives of exercise ‘Obangame Express,’ which aim to ensure the safety and security of the maritime environment. By actively participating in this exercise, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to working with Gulf of Guinea nations to promote economic activities and protect vital sea routes.

Vice Admiral Ogalla also highlighted the forthcoming launch of a joint maritime task force by the African Union. This task force will enhance regional cooperation in combating maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, aligning with the broader objectives of exercise ‘Obangame Express.’

The deployment of warships, helicopters, and the involvement of the naval Special Boat Service (Special Forces) demonstrate Nigeria’s determination to combat sea piracy effectively. Through collaborative efforts and joint exercises, the Nigerian Navy aims to secure the region’s maritime environment, facilitating economic growth and stability.
