Abuja – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned members of the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED) against the purchase and sale of substandard medications.
This warning highlights the critical need for rigorous measures to combat the proliferation of substandard and falsified medical products in Nigeria.
During a one-day sensitization campaign held in Abuja on Monday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, was represented by the agency’s Director of Post-Marketing Surveillance, Fraden Bitrus. He addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of sourcing quality products for the welfare of local communities.
“Today, we are addressing a vital issue: the sourcing of quality products for our communities,” Bitrus stated. He urged participants to prioritize community health over profit, highlighting their essential role as healthcare professionals. “Your services have a direct impact on community welfare. It is crucial to prioritize the well-being of those you serve.”
Bitrus outlined key strategies for avoiding the distribution of falsified products, stressing the importance of sourcing from reputable suppliers and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards set by NAFDAC. “To prevent the circulation of falsified products, it is essential to source correctly and verify that all items meet NAFDAC regulations,” he advised.
He called on attendees to join forces against counterfeit products, supporting NAFDAC’s efforts to eliminate harmful items from the marketplace. Bitrus concluded by reinforcing the campaign’s key messages: prioritizing community welfare, sourcing quality products, and upholding professional responsibilities.
“Let’s work together to ensure that Nigeria has access to safe and effective products,” he emphasized, underscoring the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in the fight against substandard drugs.
