Manchester United has recently held discussions with Alejandro Garnacho regarding his social media engagement.
The winger had liked posts on a social media platform that criticized manager Erik ten Hag for his handling of the player.
During Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday, Garnacho liked two messages posted by Mark Goldbridge, a United fan and YouTuber. One of the posts accused Ten Hag of unfairly treating Garnacho and “throwing him under the bus” based on comments made by the United boss about the player’s performance. The other post expressed discontent over Garnacho being taken off at halftime and blamed the decision for highlighting him as the problem.
Garnacho swiftly unliked both messages, which the club considers as a gesture of contrition. A United source informed the PA news agency that the matter has been addressed internally.
The 19-year-old winger has played a significant role for Manchester United this season, contributing nine goals and four assists in 42 matches.
This incident follows a previous one in September involving Jadon Sancho, who expressed feeling like a “scapegoat” after being excluded from the squad for the Arsenal match. Ten Hag had mentioned Sancho’s poor training as the reason behind his omission. Sancho disputed the claim and stated that he wouldn’t tolerate untrue statements, implying that Ten Hag misrepresented the situation. As a result, Sancho was temporarily removed from the first team and subsequently loaned to Borussia Dortmund in January.
Ten Hag’s position as manager has faced renewed scrutiny following the draw against Bournemouth, which has left Manchester United in seventh place in the Premier League table, 13 points adrift from the top four.
With the FA Cup remaining as the sole opportunity for silverware this season, Manchester United is set to face second-tier side Coventry in the semi-final at Wembley on Sunday.
