A 30-year-old man, Chinonso Nwaebonyi, has been arrested by security operatives for the alleged defilement of a seven-year-old girl in Awka, the capital of Anambra State.

Nwaebonyi, a native of the Izzi community in Ebonyi State, was apprehended following a report from the girl’s mother to the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. The details of the incident were disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.

According to the statement, Nwaebonyi initially denied the allegations during interrogation but later admitted to the crime, claiming it occurred “only once.” However, the victim recounted that the suspect had assaulted her multiple times over the past few weeks while she and her twin brother played in a neighboring compound.

The mother learned of the situation when she noticed swelling in her daughter’s private area after returning home from work. After questioning her daughter, she promptly sought help from the suspect’s guardians and subsequently took her child to a pharmacy before reporting the matter to the ministry.

During his interrogation, Nwaebonyi stated that he did not force the girl but asked her to lift her clothes and lie down. The victim and her twin brother were born after their parents experienced a decade of childlessness.

As of this report, the suspect has been transferred to the police for further investigation and will face charges in court.

It is important to note that the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, enacted in 2015, criminalizes all forms of violence against women and girls, including rape and defilement. Offenders can face life imprisonment or a maximum of 14 years in prison, depending on the severity of the crime and the age of the offender.

Numerous arrests related to similar offenses have been made in Anambra, with many cases currently awaiting prosecution in various courts.
