Nigeria has officially qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, thanks to Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali on Thursday, as reported by Dailyscoop247.com
The Mediterranean Knights delivered a stunning performance, scoring the winning goal in the 84th minute through Saad Mohamed, which not only revived Libya’s qualification hopes but also confirmed Nigeria’s spot at the upcoming tournament.
Originally, the Super Eagles were set to face the Benin Republic at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan and needed at least a point to ensure their advancement. However, Libya’s win secured their qualification before the match even kicked off, a significant turnaround after Nigeria’s challenging encounter with Libya in October.
As three-time African champions, Nigeria will make their 21st appearance at the AFCON, scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The team recently finished as runners-up in the 2023 edition held in Ivory Coast, where they lost to the hosts 2-1 in the final—a heart-wrenching fifth defeat in an AFCON final since their debut in 1963. Nigeria has also claimed third place on eight occasions.
The Super Eagles’ titles were secured on home soil in 1980, as well as in Tunisia in 1994 and South Africa in 2013. With Libya’s victory, Nigeria will now focus on securing the top spot in their group, with a match against Rwanda still on the horizon at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday.
