The Lagos State Government has raised alarms regarding the risk of an imminent building collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks located in Onigbongbo, Ikeja.
In response, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is preparing to initiate emergency evacuation and demolition of the aging Block 3 of the barracks.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, reported that an assessment of the structure revealed it to be in a precarious state. He emphasized the need for immediate evacuation of the building and nearby structures to prevent potential loss of life and property.
“The agency has dispatched a response team to the site, and our findings indicate that both the main building and adjacent structures must be evacuated without delay. Our response plan includes a thorough assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He further noted that this preemptive demolition action is being conducted under the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, citing the building’s dangerous condition and the risk of secondary incidents if left unaddressed.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged the public in the vicinity to remain calm and to avoid spreading misinformation on social media. He reassured residents that the situation is being closely monitored and managed by the authorities.
