The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has passionately appealed to the Federal Government for the prompt release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, citing alarming deterioration in his health while in detention.
In an official statement released on Friday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful expressed deep concern over the well-being of Nnamdi Kanu and called for urgent international attention. The statement highlighted the group’s belief that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the judiciary, has orchestrated a deliberate plot to harm Kanu through the manipulation of the judicial system.
“Our organization wishes to bring to the attention of the global community that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, our esteemed leader, is facing an imminent threat to his life due to the unjust actions of the Federal Government and its judiciary,” the statement read.
According to IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu was forcefully apprehended and unlawfully brought to Nigeria, where he has been held in the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facilities in Abuja for nearly three years. The group claims that his health has significantly deteriorated during his confinement, and the DSS has resorted to experimental drugs and treatments to address his serious medical conditions.
The statement further emphasized the lack of adequate medical facilities within the DSS to adequately address Kanu’s deteriorating heart condition. Despite being discharged and acquitted by the Appeal Court in Abuja, the Federal Government has allegedly refused to release Kanu, exploiting the corrupt elements within Nigeria’s legal system. IPOB asserts that this deliberate inaction denies Kanu access to proper medical care.
“It appears that the Federal Government, in collusion with the judiciary, intends to systematically eliminate Kanu by unlawfully detaining him until his heart and lungs fail,” Powerful stated.
IPOB warned that any individual or group involved in the persecution of Nnamdi Kanu would face severe consequences, vowing to take appropriate action if any harm befalls their leader. The group maintains that Kanu is innocent and has committed no crime.
