The House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has called upon the management of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) following allegations of mistreatment towards Mr.

Adebola Daniel, a person living with a disability and the son of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel.

Chairman of the committee, Bashiru Ayinla, made this announcement during a press briefing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday. Ayinla, a member of the All Progressives Congress representing Oshodi/Isolo-1 Federal Constituency, Lagos State, emphasized that the committee is committed to ensuring that anyone found in violation of the Disability Act faces appropriate legal consequences.

Adebola, who uses a wheelchair, reportedly encountered denial of access to the KFC outlet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos last week. The manager allegedly stated, “No wheelchair allowed.” Commenting on this incident, Ayinla stated, “We have invited KFC for an investigation in accordance with the rules of the House.”

He further highlighted the significance of Mr. Daniel’s public account, which sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. Ayinla emphasized that the mistreatment Adebola experienced is unacceptable, contradicting the principles of inclusivity, respect, and violating the provisions of the Disability Act.

Ayinla urged for a thorough implementation of the Discrimination against People with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the Act’s provisions. He called on state governments to follow Lagos State’s example and domesticate the Disability Act, while emphasizing the need for sustained public awareness to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.

Responding to questions from journalists, Ayinla dismissed any notion that the committee’s actions were solely influenced by the involvement of a highly influential individual, stating, “If it takes Daniel’s son to raise awareness and enable our committee to gain access to public places, so be it.”
