In a shocking turn of events, the peaceful community of Onipi in Adoka, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, was thrown into chaos as armed herders launched an unprovoked attack. The assault, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, resulted in the tragic loss of two lives.

The herders, suspected to be armed, descended upon the community, targeting unsuspecting victims in their farms. The onslaught didn’t stop at the loss of human lives. The attackers went further to set ablaze yam barns and a mini truck loaded with yams from the farms.

The community is still reeling from the shock of the sudden attack. The motive behind this violent act remains a mystery, as there were no prior conflicts reported between the farmers and the herders. The community is now grappling with the aftermath of the attack, with several people still missing.

Alfred Omakwu, the Caretaker Chairman of Otukpo LGA, confirmed the incident. He revealed that besides the tragic loss of two lives, the invaders also left a trail of destruction, damaging several properties.

The police have been informed about the incident, but the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, could not be reached for comments. The community now waits in anticipation for justice to be served and for the return of their missing loved ones.

As the dust settles in Otukpo, one question lingers: How can such unprovoked attacks be prevented in the future? Only time will tell if the authorities can provide a satisfactory answer to this burning question.
