The Delta State Police Command has arrested a group of suspects accused of defrauding an unsuspecting victim out of ₦1.5 million through an elaborate scam.
According to SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer, the suspects had approached the victim and claimed to have foreseen a bright future for him. They then convinced the man to accompany them to a river in Osun State, under the pretense of performing a ritual to extract more money from him.
“This chap was scammed over ₦1.5 million by some suspects who claimed that they saw a bright future for him,” Edafe revealed in a post on the police’s X.com account. “They took him to a river in Osun State all in a bid to extract more money from him.”
In a video shared by the police, the victim recounted the incident, explaining that one of the suspects had approached him and requested that he purchase coconut and salt for a supposed ritual. “He said there is one thing he is going to do for me. He said I should buy coconut and salt, and that I will give him the coconut and he will take it to three junctions to pray for me.”
Fortunately, the victim realized what was happening and reported the matter to the police, leading to the prompt arrest of the suspects.
“The victim reported to the police when he realised what was happening. They were promptly arrested,” Edafe stated.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which scammers will go to defraud unsuspecting individuals. The Delta State Police Command has vowed to continue its crackdown on such criminal activities, urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.
“We will not relent in our efforts to apprehend and prosecute those who prey on the vulnerabilities of our citizens,” a police spokesperson said. “The public’s cooperation is crucial in our fight against this scourge of fraud and deception.”
