Four Nigerian students residing in the United Kingdom have received prison sentences for their roles in a violent knife altercation that took place in Leicester.
The incident, which occurred on November 4, 2021, on New Park Street, resulted in one individual suffering multiple stab wounds.
Following the confrontation, Leicester City Police launched an investigation that utilized CCTV footage, phone tracking, and assistance from the public to identify the suspects. The six-week trial concluded in October, and sentencing was issued on November 14.
According to a report released by the Leicester police last Thursday, the students—Destiny Ojo, Habib Lawal, Ridwanulahi Raheem, and Joshua Davies-Ero—are all in their early 20s and received sentences ranging from two to seven years.
Destiny Ojo was sentenced to seven years for charges including violent disorder and attempted grievous bodily harm. Habib Lawal received a five-year sentence for similar offenses, while Ridwanulahi Raheem was sentenced to three years for violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. Joshua Davies-Ero received a two-year sentence for violent disorder.
A fifth defendant, 22-year-old Justin Asamoah, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 22.
A spokesperson for Leicester Police praised the community for their support during the investigation and emphasized the importance of addressing violent behavior to maintain public safety. Detective Constable Sean Downey remarked, “This incident highlights the serious risks associated with violent disorder. Fortunately, the injuries were not more severe or fatal, but the potential for tragedy was significant.”
He further expressed gratitude to the community for their assistance: “Our priority as a police force is public safety. We will not tolerate violent behavior in our neighborhoods and are committed to taking robust action against offenders.”
