Former Super Eagles winger Finidi George has been appointed as the new head coach of the Nigeria senior men’s national team, according to an announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday. The decision comes after the NFF Board approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to entrust the leadership role to the 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis forward.

Finidi George had previously served as an assistant to the outgoing coach, José Santos Peseiro, for a period of 20 months. Following Peseiro’s departure after the Super Eagles’ impressive performance in reaching the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, George took charge as the interim coach.

During his interim tenure, George supervised the team in two friendly matches held in Morocco last month. The matches proved significant as Nigeria ended an 18-year winless streak against Ghana with a 2-1 victory. However, they faced a defeat in their subsequent match against Mali, with a scoreline of 0-2.

By appointing Finidi George as the head coach, the Nigeria Football Federation aims to build upon the recent successes of the national team and continue their pursuit of excellence in the international football arena.
