Inter Milan winger Denzel Dumfries has issued an apology for his “error of judgment” in holding up an insulting banner featuring AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez during the Scudetto celebration parade. Dumfries acknowledged that his actions were inappropriate and not smart, and he understands that he may face consequences, including a fine or suspension for violating the code of conduct.

In an Instagram post, Dumfries expressed his gratitude to the fans for their support and participation in the parade, emphasizing the significance of celebrating together. He admitted that holding up the offensive banner was a mistake on his part and stated his intention to move forward and focus on the incredible season that Inter Milan had. He thanked the supporters once again and assured them that he would always cherish the memories of the celebrations.

The incident involving Dumfries and the banner sparked controversy during the open-top bus parade. He noticed a fan holding a large banner depicting himself holding a dog on a leash with Theo Hernandez’s face. Dumfries requested the banner and excitedly raised it above his head. This differs from Roma defender Gianluca Mancini’s defense after the Derby della Capitale, where he claimed not to have seen the rat symbol on a flag handed to him by ultras.

Inter Milan had been cautious throughout the season to avoid engaging in mocking their rivals or individual players. Even during the Piazza Duomo stage of the celebration, the speaker interrupted a chant about Theo Hernandez, emphasizing that the purpose was to celebrate themselves rather than discuss others.
