In a recent development, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a significant drop in crime rates across the country over the past few months.
During a meeting with Commissioners of Police in Abuja, Egbetokun attributed this decline to the effective strategies deployed by the police force.
According to Egbetokun, major crimes reported in the last month stood at 416, a significant decrease from the 734 and 530 cases recorded in May and June, respectively. He commended the dedication and professionalism of the police personnel, stating that their “undiluted passion and commitment have yielded significant results across the length and breadth of our nation.”
In the fight against criminal activities, the police force has made significant strides. Egbetokun revealed that in the last month, a total of 1,284 suspects were arrested nationwide, and 284 firearms, 6,702 ammunition rounds, and 107 vehicles were recovered. Additionally, 97 kidnapped victims were rescued.
Furthermore, the IG mentioned that the IGP Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Corporate has taken steps to reorganize and reposition itself, enhancing its operations in the fight against oil theft in Nigeria. The task force has recorded notable successes, including the interception of suspected stolen goods and the arrest of perpetrators, as well as the seizure of exhibits.
Egbetokun emphasized that these achievements are the result of cooperation and collaboration with members of the public and other security agencies, and he commended the dedication and professionalism of the police personnel.
The declining crime rates and the successful operations of the police force have been welcomed as positive indicators of the ongoing efforts to maintain internal security and ensure the safety of the public.
