Singer and activist Charly Boy has shared insights into his complicated relationship with his late father, Chukwudifu Oputa, a former Supreme Court Justice, revealing that their differences stemmed from his unconformist nature.
In a recent interview on the “With Chude” podcast, Charly Boy reflected on the challenges he faced in understanding his father during his lifetime. He explained that their strained relationship was marked by his rebellion against strict household rules imposed by Justice Oputa.
“My issues with authority began at home,” Charly Boy recounted. “I often questioned why my father dictated our every action—when to eat, when to pray. I grew tired of it.” He noted that he was frequently punished for his refusal to comply, which he attributes to the very lessons his father instilled in him about questioning the status quo.
“I was the one who was whipped the most among my siblings because I wouldn’t follow orders. My father encouraged us to query and investigate everything, so I often found myself in vocal battles with him.”
Charly Boy acknowledged that this dynamic affected their bond. “I didn’t understand his methods, and he saw me as a rebellious child. We didn’t really like each other until we both matured. As he aged, we began to recognize the beauty in each other’s personalities.”
Reflecting on their relationship, he concluded, “We didn’t agree on anything, which hindered our connection. He didn’t know who I was, and I didn’t fully grasp who he was either.”
