A horrific incident has shaken tourists and the Indian public alike. A Spanish woman traveling by motorbike with her partner was allegedly gang-raped in eastern India, sparking outrage and raising concerns about tourist safety.

According to reports from Al Jazeera, the attack occurred on Friday night in the Dumka district of Jharkhand state. The couple, who haven’t been identified, were reportedly camping for the night when a group of seven men assaulted them. The woman was gang-raped, and both she and her partner sustained injuries.

Thankfully, the couple managed to flag down a police patrol vehicle later that night. They were taken to a hospital for treatment, and authorities launched an investigation. News outlets like The Independent report that Indian police have arrested four people suspected of involvement in the attack. Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

This brutal attack has cast a shadow on India’s tourism industry, which has been working to rebuild itself after the COVID-19 pandemic. The incident has also reignited discussions about safety concerns faced by women travelers in India.
