Lagos, August 12, 2024 – In an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, the Federal High Court in Lagos has extended the remand of Sulaimon Jimoh, a suspected drug baron known by the aliases “Olowo Idi Ogede” and “Temo.”

Justice Akintayo Aluko granted the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) request to keep Temo, as he is commonly known, in custody for an additional 14 days. This extension comes after the initial 14-day remand order issued on July 26, 2024.

The NDLEA’s lead prosecutor, Lambert Nor, argued that the extension is crucial as the investigation has revealed a broader and more complex network of drug activities, both nationally and internationally, that requires further examination.

“Preliminary investigations have uncovered a more sensitive network of drug trafficking, and we are still awaiting responses from various agencies and institutions connected to the case,” Nor told the court.

The NDLEA’s affidavit, submitted in support of the motion, highlighted that the initial remand period was disrupted by nationwide protests and the unavailability of the suspect’s counsel, causing delays in the investigation.

“The ongoing investigation has uncovered a more complex and sensitive network of drug activities, with inquiries sent to sister agencies and other relevant bodies still pending. This makes it necessary to seek additional time,” the affidavit stated.

After reviewing the submissions, Justice Aluko ruled in favor of the NDLEA’s request, granting the extension until August 23, 2024, when the agency is expected to present its investigation report.

Temo, who had been a wanted drug baron for over a decade, was initially remanded on July 26, 2024, and the case was adjourned until August 9, 2024, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. However, the case has now been further adjourned for an additional 14 days.

The NDLEA’s continued efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks in the region are expected to have a significant impact on the availability and distribution of illicit substances in the country.
