In response to the escalating cases of violence, abductions, and other grave crimes in the South-West region, Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has called upon the governors of the states to adopt a different approach to safeguard the lives and property of citizens.

Afenifere emphasized the necessity of adequately equipping the Amotekun Corps to effectively counter the activities of criminal elements prevalent in the region.

During a visit to Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State, Afenifere leaders expressed their concerns over the recent killing of two traditional rulers and the abduction of five school children and teachers from Apostolic Nursery and Primary School in Emure. The delegation, led by Chief Korede Duyile, conveyed the message of Afenifere and extended their condolences to the governor and the people of Ekiti.

Duyile stated, “In this critical situation affecting our region and country, our governors must collaborate to address the incursion of these criminal elements into our land. It is evident that the Amotekun Corps needs to be fully equipped to confront these adversaries. The governors should ensure that Amotekun operatives are provided with advanced weaponry to combat the marauders.” He also emphasized the need for President Bola Tinubu to initiate the process of true federalism, enabling the governors to assume greater responsibility for security matters within their respective states.

Governor Oyebanji expressed gratitude for Afenifere’s visit and condemned the killings of the traditional rulers as sacrilegious acts. He reassured the delegation that the perpetrators of these crimes would be apprehended and brought to justice. The governor further pledged that the regional governors would develop a viable plan to ensure the security of lives and properties throughout the state.

“We have heard your concerns, and we will explore all avenues to protect our people. While we acknowledge the legal limitations on Amotekun regarding arms and ammunition, we will strive to do our utmost for the well-being of our citizens,” stated Governor Oyebanji. He also urged Afenifere to foster unity during this period, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in defending the people.
