LAGOS, Nigeria – The newly introduced passport automation process has caused significant challenges for Nigerians seeking to obtain or renew their international passports, according to an investigation by our investigative reporter. The automation system, implemented by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has led to long delays, frustration, and confusion among applicants.

Nigerians living abroad who returned home for the Yuletide holidays have been particularly affected by the new system. Many have found it difficult to renew their passports before their return flights, leaving them stranded in Nigeria. They have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and address the situation, describing the automation process as “ill-advised and ill-timed.”

The new system has also caused problems at passport offices across the country. Applicants have reported difficulties in making online payments, uploading photos and documents, and navigating the complex application process. Immigration officers have expressed concerns about the lack of training and support provided to them before the system was implemented.

One of the key challenges is the requirement for applicants to upload photos that meet the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Many applicants lack the necessary equipment and knowledge to do this, leading to further delays. Additionally, the lack of reliable power supply and internet connectivity in some passport offices has exacerbated the problems.

Applicants and immigration officers have called for a review of the new automation system to address the challenges and improve the passport application process. They have emphasized the need for adequate training, technical support, and a phased implementation to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.

Some immigration officers have also raised concerns about the potential security implications of the new system. They fear that the lack of proper screening could make it easier for non-Nigerians and individuals with malicious intent to obtain passports.

The passport automation process has created significant challenges for Nigerians seeking to obtain or renew their international passports. Diaspora applicants have been particularly affected, and immigration officers have expressed concerns about the system’s implementation and potential security risks. The government must address these issues and work towards improving the passport application process to ensure a seamless and secure experience for all Nigerians.
