Barcelona is reportedly planning to extend Robert Lewandowski’s contract, a decision that may put their interest in star forwards Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyökeres on hold.

The 36-year-old Polish striker’s current deal is set to expire next summer. However, according to a report from Sport on Sunday, the club is likely to activate a clause that would extend his stay for an additional year, with discussions underway to potentially keep him until 2027.

Lewandowski has been in remarkable form this season, scoring 20 goals in 18 appearances, which has significantly influenced Barcelona’s approach in the transfer market. His exceptional performance appears to have led the club to delay investments in acquiring another striker.

Barcelona has been linked with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyökeres of Sporting CP, but the club’s ongoing financial difficulties complicate any immediate transfers. This decision is seen as a strategic move, with Lewandowski’s scoring prowess serving as a “stopgap” while the club navigates its economic challenges.

Sport also notes that while Barcelona is committed to finding a long-term successor for Lewandowski, financial stability remains a priority. A report by Goal on Sunday suggested that if Lewandowski continues his current trajectory, the club may not need to seek another striker for at least another year.

As Barcelona shifts its focus to the Champions League, they prepare to host Brest on Tuesday. Hansi Flick’s side is eager to bounce back from a disappointing 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo, where they relinquished a two-goal lead late in the match.
