Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, has acknowledged that his players face a challenging period ahead after the team managed only a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in his inaugural match at the helm.
In a post-match press conference on Sunday, Amorim urged Manchester United supporters to remain patient as the squad undergoes significant changes. “I understand the frustration among fans, but we are in the midst of a transformation, with many games still to come,” he explained. “Winning against Ipswich was possible, but we could have also lost if it weren’t for our goalkeeper, Onana. It’s important to recognize that the players had only two days to adapt and train.”
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Amorim emphasized the need for improved cohesion and understanding of his tactical approach. “This league is unforgiving, and that’s something you learn quickly. My players seemed to overthink their roles on the pitch, which affected their positioning and overall play,” he noted. “Given the limited preparation time, it’s understandable that there was some confusion.”
Amorim highlighted specific areas for improvement, stating, “We lacked the necessary physicality in the first half. Players like Hutchinson found themselves in unmarked areas, while Jonny Evans struggled to press effectively. With only two days of training, it’s hard to instill the desired reactions in such a short time.”
The head coach expressed optimism about his players’ potential, mentioning that they are eager to learn and adapt. “It’s a process of discovery. For instance, I learned that Alejandro Garnacho has the ability to hold the ball well between the lines. We need to identify and develop these strengths,” he said. “Bruno Fernandes is another player who thrives when he is close to the ball, enabling him to deliver long passes, but we can’t rely on him to operate in that position all the time.”
The game itself began promisingly for United, with Marcus Rashford scoring just two minutes after kickoff. However, Ipswich quickly regained control, dominating possession and eventually equalizing through Omari Hutchinson, whose shot was deflected off Noussair Mazrouai.
Despite the draw, Amorim pointed out that the team’s total distance covered—102 kilometers—was their second-lowest of the season. When questioned about the team’s physical struggles, he replied, “We need to analyze the data and understand where we can improve. To withstand high-pressure situations and maintain a high speed of play, we must enhance our physical readiness, but this requires time and consistent effort.”
As Manchester United looks ahead, Amorim remains committed to fostering growth within the squad, emphasizing that success will take time and dedication.
