Jose Mourinho, the former manager of Manchester United and Fenerbahce, has expressed his willingness to take on a coaching role with any struggling English team at the bottom of the league table for a duration of two years.
In an interview with Sky Sports following a draw against Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday, the Portuguese coach stated, “The best scenario for me is to leave Fenerbahce for a club that isn’t involved in UEFA competitions. If any club in England needs a coach in two years, I’m prepared to step in.”
Mourinho, who was shown a red card during the match, voiced his frustration with the referee’s decision, humorously questioning the official’s ability to monitor both the on-field action and his behavior on the sidelines. “He told me he had an incredible peripheral vision, watching both the penalty situation and my conduct simultaneously. I commend him for that,” Mourinho remarked.
Previously, Mourinho received a four-match European ban for his conduct during the Europa League final in May 2023, where his Roma side lost to Sevilla. He indicated that this past incident influenced his decision not to appeal his latest red card. “If I appeal, I risk a six-month ban. Since the Sevilla-Roma final, there’s no point in pursuing it,” he explained.
In the match, Manchester United initially took the lead with a goal from Christian Eriksen in the 15th minute, but Fenerbahce equalized shortly after halftime with Youssef En-Nesyri scoring from close range. While the draw leaves Fenerbahce unbeaten with five points from three games, Mourinho felt his team deserved more from the encounter.
“It’s fair to say we played extraordinarily well and were better than them. It’s a good result for Manchester United, but my players performed remarkably against a superior team. We had to rearrange our lineup significantly, finishing the game with a center-back at right-back and a right-back at left-back, but I couldn’t have asked for more from them,” he commented.
Mourinho previously guided Manchester United to victory in the Europa League during his tenure at Old Trafford and took on the Fenerbahce role this past offseason.
