Toke Makinwa, a well-known media personality, has put to rest rumors of a secret marriage that circulated during her recent 40th birthday Thanksgiving party in Lagos.
Reports began to surface on social media Sunday night, suggesting that Makinwa had quietly wed entertainment figure Farouk Umar at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island. The speculation intensified after a video emerged showing the two sharing affectionate moments, both dressed in matching attire.
However, Makinwa addressed the rumors directly at her party, clarifying that Umar is simply a close friend who has supported her during challenging times. She stated, “On Obasanjo’s internet, they said I got married to this guy. This guy is my best friend. Listen, on Toke Makinwa’s internet, they said I married Farouk. Farouk, my friend, ore mi.. this is my nigga and my friend, my brother, who wan marry you. Farouk held me down when there was nobody.”
During the celebration, Makinwa also reflected on her tumultuous past, particularly her marriage to Maje Ayida, which ended in 2017 amid allegations of infidelity. She expressed gratitude for the strength she found to navigate that difficult period, admitting that she felt as though she would not survive the divorce.
“I thank God for giving me the strength to withstand the challenges. When I thought I was going to die, you held me together,” she said, acknowledging the support from her friends throughout her struggles.
Makinwa concluded her remarks by expressing appreciation for her friends, emphasizing her commitment to looking forward rather than dwelling on the past.
