The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for their alleged involvement in the sale of newborn twins.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrests in a post on his X account on Friday. He stated that the suspects were apprehended following a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
“The suspects were arrested by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus stop, a key entry point into Lagos State,” Hundeyin explained. “They had been alerted about the suspects by a good Samaritan.”
The officers discovered two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, as the women were traveling from Abia State on September 9. Investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to deliver the infants to a nurse in Lagos, a connection facilitated by the babies’ mother.
Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, claiming they were paid ₦150,000 for transporting the babies to Lagos. They stated that the mother sold the twins because she could not provide them with adequate care.
The case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, and the newborns have been placed in the custody of a motherless baby home for proper care and medical evaluation.
Hundeyin noted that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the case. The arrested suspects were arraigned in court on Thursday.
