The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has recommended the nutrition intervention strategies implemented by Jigawa State as a model for combating malnutrition across Nigeria.
This endorsement came during a visit to Dutse, where UNICEF officials expressed their approval of the state government’s innovative approaches to addressing malnutrition.
Ms. Nemat Hajeebhoy, Chief of the Nutrition Section at UNICEF, highlighted the various initiatives taken by Jigawa’s government to combat malnutrition among children and mothers. Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with Dr. Kabir Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Hajeebhoy praised the Masaki program and the integrated health system designed to reduce malnutrition rates.
“Jigawa’s strategies serve as a blueprint for other states to follow in the fight against malnutrition,” she urged, while also encouraging the Jigawa government to enhance its efforts to maintain its leadership in this area.
In response, Dr. Ibrahim acknowledged UNICEF’s support and affirmed the state government’s commitment to adopting best practices in nutrition intervention. He also commended the roles played by the media, civil society, and legislative bodies in promoting transparency and accountability in health initiatives.
Ibrahim pointed out several challenges, including the reliance on donor funding for nutrition interventions and the management of health facilities. He noted that inadequate funding has hindered the operations of the Masaki program, which is crucial for storing nutritional baby foods and bathing infants.
“Despite these challenges, 90% of Masaki beneficiaries previously lacked access to health facilities for nutrition services, but the introduction of Outpatient Treatment Programs (OTPs) is helping to address malnutrition effectively,” he explained. “The Masaki initiative is entirely a state-led effort.”
Following the meeting, the UNICEF team visited the Tisa Masaki, Sakwaya Primary Health Care Centre, and Dutse General Hospital to evaluate the nutrition services available to children and mothers and to provide immediate support.
