Lagos, August 23, 2024 – It was a morning of mayhem on the streets of Lagos as two separate traffic incidents left at least 11 people injured on the city’s roads.

The first incident occurred around 7:45 AM on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, near the Iyana-Ipaja area. A fully loaded high-capacity Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus overturned and fell on its side within the dedicated BRT lane, resulting in 10 casualties, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

“A fully loaded high-capacity bus fell on its side inside the dedicated lane (BRT lane) with a record of 10 casualties (Victims), which they were taken care of,” LASTMA reported in a post on the social media platform X.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance and transport the injured victims to nearby healthcare facilities. However, further details on the cause of the accident and the condition of the victims are yet to be disclosed.

In a separate incident, a loaded truck overturned and fell at the Durbar Junction on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, completely blocking the road heading towards Alakija. This accident has caused significant traffic disruption, with authorities diverting vehicles through the service lane from Orile to Durbar.

“There is a fallen loaded truck at Durbar junction inward Alakija that took 100% of the road,” LASTMA said in a post. “Traffic has been diverted through the service lane from Orile heading towards Durbar.”

Efforts are underway to evacuate the fallen truck and restore normal traffic flow in the area. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and patience as the situation unfolds.

Additionally, LASTMA reported a road crash involving two vehicles that occurred opposite Northwest, heading inward Ajah. The agency attributed this accident to over-speeding, resulting in one injured victim.

The chaotic events on Lagos roads this morning serve as a stark reminder of the need for increased safety measures and better traffic management in the bustling metropolis. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and heed the instructions of traffic officials as they work to clear the obstructions and restore order to the city’s transportation network.
