Enugu, Nigeria – Nigerian highlife sensation Flavour N’abania, known for his soulful vocals and infectious rhythms, has revealed a poignant tale of his journey to stardom, highlighting a pivotal moment that propelled him from a seasoned musician to a household name.
In a recent interview with the “In My Opinion” podcast, Flavour traced his musical roots back to his days as a choir conductor and drummer in church. His dedication caught the eye of a music company owner, who offered him a chance to hone his skills. “I was fortunate to be there during rehearsals,” Flavour recalled, “It was my first encounter with a proper music setup.” He spent 13 years with the band, eventually becoming the bandleader, but his aspirations extended beyond the confines of the group.
“My dream wasn’t about being Flavour or being in the spotlight,” he admitted. “I simply wanted to play at events.” After leaving the band, Flavour immersed himself in the vibrant street music scene, performing at various venues across Enugu. “It was a tough transition,” he said, “but I was determined to make my mark.”
However, it was a chance encounter with the iconic Nigerian duo, PSquare, that truly ignited his ambition. Flavour was performing at his usual spot in Enugu’s City Centre, a place where he had cultivated a loyal following, when PSquare arrived for a promotional event.
“The manager told me to stop playing and step aside,” Flavour recounted. “I watched as Paul of PSquare took the microphone and said, ‘This na temptation,’ and the crowd went wild.” This experience, he explained, was a stark realization that he needed to create his own unique sound and evolve from a seasoned musician into a bona fide artist.
“I realized the difference was that they created their own music, went to the studio, and recorded,” he said. “I was just a music man.” Flavour’s determination to forge his own path led him to start afresh, a journey that ultimately culminated in the success he enjoys today. His story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of finding one’s own voice, and the transformative nature of a single, defining moment.
