LAGOS – Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank) has confirmed an attempt to compromise its website domain on Wednesday, but has assured customers that the incident was unsuccessful and no customer data was compromised.

The hacking attempt, which occurred shortly after the bank renewed its website domain name, caused a temporary disruption to online services, leading to widespread concern and media reports suggesting a potential data breach.

In a statement released on Thursday, GTBank clarified that its website was not cloned and that customer information is not stored on the website itself. “While there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain, we would like to assure all our customers and stakeholders that the bank’s website has not been cloned,” the statement read.

The bank’s Information Security experts are working to restore domain settings, and the website is now fully operational. GTBank emphasized its commitment to safeguarding customer data and urged customers to disregard the inaccurate media reports.

“We urge all our customers to please disregard the claims in these media reports and assure you of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding customer data,” the statement concluded.

The incident highlights the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks targeting financial institutions. While GTBank has assured customers of their data security, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and vigilance in protecting sensitive information.
